Seasonal Naturalist
The Seasonal Naturalist position starts as a temporary, seasonal position teaching children outdoors.
Naturalists can expect to work 20-40 hours during program weeks and are not guaranteed work outside of program weeks. Naturalists report to the Executive Director.
Naturalists have the option to stay on year-round and work all seasons by invitation. Work between seasons and outside of program weeks is limited to 10-20 hours a week and involves supporting all GBOS functions.
Those hired for the remainder of the season may work 10-20 hours weekly until the next season. Work will include assisting the Directors and Board President with all GBOS functions.
Spring Naturalists work as lead educators at our Overnight Science Camp and Day Field Trips.
Our Overnight Science Camp at Galilee is an opportunity for naturalists to teach local ecology and standardized science to school groups along the shores of Lake Tahoe and Spooner Lake.
Naturalists present a hands-on, experiential, inquiry-based program in getting connected, astronomy, life science, water ecology and geology during 2-day, 3-day, or 4-day overnight science camps. Most students are enrolled in 4th – 6th grade and are divided into trail groups of about 12. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tahoe from staff lodging and delicious meals prepared by the Galilee staff, all while spending plenty of time outdoors! Please note that staff lodging is ONLY offered during overnights.
The Day Field Trips are mini versions of our overnight trips that take place at Galena Creek or Spooner Lake State Park. Students hike with their naturalist trail group while stopping to perform engaging activities and observe the natural environment surrounding them. Naturalist hours are from approximately 9:30am-1:30pm.
