Overview

Teslas world-class Cell Manufacturing Engineering team is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer for an exciting new project. This role involves designing, developing, commissioning, and ramping high-speed automated equipment. You will work in a cross-functional team to test, validate, and implement process and product design changes.

The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This position offers the opportunity to make significant contributions to our products. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced, and highly exciting. The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits and join a motivated team to turn innovative ideas into reality.

Responsibilities
  1. Drive the design, development, commissioning, and ramp-up of part feeding, material handling/loading, and active mover or linear motion conveyance systems used in custom high-speed automated manufacturing equipment. Design equipment fixtures, part loading, feeding, and conveyance systems to enhance functionality and productivity.
  2. Collaborate as the equipment expert to ensure safe, efficient production lines that produce high-quality parts. Take ownership of equipment-related process improvements, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis. Manage data effectiveness and reliability for automated active mover/transport systems.
  3. Debug and optimize automated processes to reduce cycle times and maximize Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Troubleshoot and recover processes using PLC, HMI, or tool management software. Support maintenance teams in troubleshooting and resolving extended downtime. Develop training materials, maintenance routines, and documentation for equipment lifecycle management.
  4. Lead safety and ergonomic improvements for production equipment, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
  5. Identify critical spare parts for equipment and ensure sufficient stock to prevent extended downtime.
  6. Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT) with suppliers and internal teams.
  7. Develop and manage FMEA/risk assessments to prioritize equipment improvements and repair strategies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in interdisciplinary/integrated Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • 3D CAD design experience in production equipment, high-volume part handling, conveyance systems, linear motion systems, layout validation, tooling drawings, pneumatic and electrical schematics.
  • Experience ramping equipment into manufacturing, including automation assembly equipment, part and material feeding, active mover and linear motion platforms, web handling, electromechanical systems, PLCs, motion controls, vision systems, and data capture.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex electromechanical and software issues with limited documentation, and to initiate process improvements.
  • Structured problem-solving skills, root cause analysis experience, and familiarity with statistical software (JMP is a plus). Experience with motion control programming and system backup/restoration is advantageous.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  • Knowledge of Battery Cell technology is a plus.
