Senior Mechanical Engineer

Description:

Rugged Science has an immediate need for a Senior Mechanical Engineer responsible for electronics packaging of digital and computer-based products for DOD, industrial, and government applications. The candidate must be self-motivated, work well independently and in a team, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assess technical risk and cost for new business proposals, review customer product requirements, and translate them into functional and ergonomic designs.
  2. Select critical electrical and mechanical components to meet design requirements; collaborate with vendors to specify requirements for mass production.
  3. Perform engineering analyses including Tolerance Stack-up, FEA (structural, modal, thermal), and hand calculations.
  4. Define form factor, mounting methods, component placement, RF shielding, and thermal paths for enclosures.
  5. Create comprehensive documentation for new product development, focusing on design for assembly and manufacturing, with strong communication skills.
  6. Consider current and future design platforms for consistency and compatibility.
  7. Participate in a multidisciplinary team, taking direction from Business Development and Engineering, and overseeing junior engineers.
  8. Develop and execute prototype test plans to ensure quality and proper fabrication, assembly, and installation techniques.
  9. Design using sheet metal, welding, and CNC machining; coordinate with suppliers for production transfer.
  10. Support production, manufacturing, and testing teams hands-on.
  11. Provide operational support, including cost analysis, BOM generation, engineering change notices, and technical assistance.

Requirements:
  1. BSc in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  2. 5-10 years of experience in mechanical product design, electronic packaging, and enclosure design.
  3. Experience with sheet metal, welding, and CNC techniques.
  4. Knowledge of DFM/A principles.
  5. Experience with structural and thermal analysis; familiarity with Inventor FEA or NASTRAN preferred.
  6. Experience with electronic hardware integration including embedded computers, servers, switches, sensors, etc.
  7. Proficiency in Solid Modeling CAD; Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD preferred.
  8. Knowledge of ASME drawing standards.
  9. Familiarity with military standards such as MIL-STD-1472, MIL-S-901D, MIL-STD-167-1, and EMI/RFI standards.
  10. US Citizenship or permanent residency.
