This role drives research, qualification, and implementation of material systems for aerospace applications—ensuring structural integrity, regulatory compliance, and optimized performance.

The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strong leadership, program management capabilities, and cross-functional collaboration skills to support product development and manufacturing initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the technical authority on materials and processes across engineering and production teams.
  • Lead R&D efforts in materials innovation, including surface treatments, coatings, and structural joining techniques.
  • Evaluate and qualify adhesives, sealants, and composite-compatible fasteners for aerospace applications.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive material and process specifications, test plans, and qualification protocols.
  • Support material compatibility reviews, bonding analysis, and root cause investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant aerospace standards (ASTM, SAE, NADCAP, AS9100).
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies and regulatory changes in materials engineering.

Program & Project Management

  • Lead fastener and structural joining programs from concept through implementation.
  • Define program scope, timelines, and deliverables in coordination with stakeholders.
  • Manage resources, schedules, and budgets to meet program objectives.
  • Identify risks early and implement mitigation strategies to ensure successful execution.
  • Document and present program status updates to leadership and stakeholders.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Design, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and Supply Chain teams to ensure cohesive project execution.
  • Coordinate with external customers and suppliers to align technical requirements and ensure compliance.
  • Facilitate communication across departments to resolve issues, share findings, and improve processes.

Quality & Compliance

  • Develop and enforce quality control processes to meet internal and customer requirements.
  • Participate in audits and support certification activities.
  • Implement lessons learned and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in aerospace materials engineering, ideally focused on fastener or joining applications.
  • In-depth understanding of adhesive bonding, surface prep, metallic/composite materials, and corrosion protection.
  • Familiarity with material characterization tools (e.g., SEM, DSC, TGA, FTIR).
  • Experience with aerospace qualification standards (e.g., MIL-STD, ASTM, AMS).
  • Strong project management capabilities and proficiency in tools like MS Project or Aras.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills.
  • 2–5 years of direct experience in M&P engineering within the aerospace or manufacturing industry (fastener experience preferred).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with automated bonding systems, robotic application systems, or NDE/NDT techniques.
  • Familiarity with FEA or materials modeling software.
  • Past involvement in patent development or technology road mapping.

Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Able to lead complex technical programs with cross-functional teams.
  • Flexible and adaptable in dynamic environments.
  • Able to navigate between long-term strategic goals and day-to-day technical execution.
  • Confident making critical decisions under pressure, while welcoming feedback and collaboration.
