Principal Software Engineer - Azure Storage

Overview: Azure Storage team is responsible for building, managing, and operating the persistent cloud storage for Microsoft Azure. We are a foundational service in Azure Cloud, hosting data for major global companies and Microsoft's online services.

We seek a Principal Software Engineer passionate about building and optimizing a world-class distributed file system. If you enjoy working on large-scale distributed systems, defining project scope, and architecting innovative solutions, this role offers a chance to impact a massive product like Azure Storage.

This position involves making high-impact changes daily while developing a hyperscale storage system that could be used by millions. You will join a talented, collaborative team responsible for engineering fundamental layers of Azure storage, working on next-generation storage platforms built on storage servers with Data Processing Units (DPU). The role offers exposure to advanced storage, memory, networking, and distributed system technologies, with broad influence on business and industry.

The team manages metadata services and data storage across servers, ensuring high availability, reliability, durability, and cost efficiency.

Responsibilities

  1. Work with stakeholders to determine user requirements for features.
  2. Identify dependencies and develop design documents with minimal oversight.
  3. Create and implement code for products, services, or features, reusing code where applicable.
  4. Help break down larger tasks into smaller, estimable work items.
  5. Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), monitoring system health and gaining approval for system restorations.
  6. Stay current with industry developments to improve product availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance, while driving operational consistency.
