SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under supervision in the Facilities Management Department.

Performs technically complex and skilled carpentry activities including, remodeling, maintenance, and repairs of District facilities. and performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Construction and Installation Tasks

Performs construction, installation, replacement, repair, and finishing of building materials, components, and systems, including but not limited to:

  • Carpentry: Rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry, doors, and hardware
  • Interior Finishes: Painting, wall coverings (including tile), tape and finish, acoustic ceilings, and walls
  • Exterior Finishes: Siding, insulation, roofing, fencing
  • Flooring: Floor coverings including tile
  • Glass and Glazing: All systems.
  • Concrete Work: Forming, pouring, and finishing
  • Site Equipment: Equipping classrooms, offices, schools, playgrounds, parking areas, and other sites
  • Special Structures: Scaffolds and bleachers
  • Surface Preparation: Sandblasting

Project Oversight and Coordination
  • Obtains material and vendor quotes, purchase orders, and permits
  • Supervises and inspects vendor or contractor projects for compliance with standards, specifications, laws, and codes
  • Assigns work to other construction trades, carpenters, and assistants
  • Determines repair priorities
  • Provides technical guidance and physical assistance on maintenance and remodel projects

Safety and Compliance
  • Maintains District policies and standards
  • Ensures adherence to safety and hazardous material precautions
  • Ensures proper inventory and maintenance of tools, equipment, and shop facilities

Cross-Trade Support and Hazardous Material Handling
  • Assists or performs work associated with other trades
  • Completes 16-hour asbestos abatement (AHERA) training
  • Performs approved work involving asbestos, lead, mold, or other hazardous materials (e.g., demolition, disposal, attachment, detachment, penetrations) in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the necessary qualifications would be:

Option 1:
    • Five (5) years of varied journey-level carpentry experience.

OR

Option 2:
    • Completion of a recognized four (4) year carpentry apprenticeship program
      AND
    • Two (2) years of varied journey-level carpentry experience.

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES

Knowledge of:
  • Principles, methods, materials, and tools used in carpentry
  • Occupational hazards and safety practices (including OSHA requirements)
  • Use and care of hand and power tools
  • Safe and effective repair techniques
  • Doors, locks, cement work, and related areas
  • International Building Code (IBC)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements

Skill in:
  • Working independently
  • Understanding and conducting verbal and written instructions
  • Performing heavy manual labor
  • Maintaining necessary written records and reports
  • Reading, interpreting, and applying construction documents, plans, sketches, and diagrams
  • Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Using PC-based computer programs
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

Licenses/Certificates: AHERA 16 Hour asbestos/Lead training will be required within the first 2 months of employment. Employer will provide training. Possession of a valid Nevada State Operator's license with a driving record acceptable to the district and obtain an Explosive Actual Fastening Tools License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Health and Safety Compliance
  • Incumbents will be provided with appropriate training and personal protective equipment (PPE) to perform all assigned work safely.
  • Must be able to use a half-mask respirator during work.
  • Must meet all health and safety requirements, including maintaining a clean-shaven face to ensure proper respirator fit.
  • Applicants will be required to pass a physical examination and a respirator fit test (full-mask or half-mask).

Work Schedule and Emergency Response
  • Working hours may include evenings and weekends as needed.
  • May be contacted during off-hours (via phone, text, email, or chat) to respond to school emergencies such as:
    • Burglaries
    • Vandalism
    • Fires
    • Snow removal
    • Equipment failures
    • Flooding
    • Building system failures critical to operations

WORK ENVIRONMENT?/ PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands: This work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequently climbing tall ladders, lifting heavy objects up to 100 pounds, pushing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or reaching, crawling in restricted areas. Must have the ability to enter all areas of a facility including roofs, attics, and crawl spaces. To some extent, the frequency or intensity of physical exertion must also be considered.

The working hours for this position will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
