Firefighter Position

This is the entry level position for the Fire Department with responsibility for firefighting, life saving, and other related work activities connected with the response to emergency and other incidents, fire prevention, equipment operation and maintenance, facility maintenance, work and skill readiness and other related tasks. This is an open competitive opportunity for individuals who meet the minimum qualifications. This is a continuous testing process that will establish an eligibility list for current and future openings.

Examples of essential functions include responding to fires and other emergency or public assistance incidents in a timely, safe, and skilled manner and participating in their control through hose laying, ladder operations, ventilation, extinguishment, salvage and other activities as part of team effort. Other duties include rescuing persons endangered by fires or other hazards and administering first aid to injured parties when assigned, conducting inspections and other fire prevention tasks including fire safety education to eliminate or reduce fire hazards and enforce fire codes, developing and maintaining high levels of work knowledge and skills for various duties through training, manipulative drills and other skill maintenance programs, operating and maintaining properly and safely firefighting and other related equipment and apparatus in an efficient and effective manner, keeping fire station and other facilities in a clean, orderly and usable condition, assisting in completing other day-to-day work such as record keeping and map maintenance, performing various public information and relations tasks, as appropriate and assigned through written and oral form, and maintaining an adequate level of physical fitness to perform firefighting, rescue, equipment operation, and other related tasks.

Minimum qualifications include being at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment and completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. License or certificate requirements include possession of a current, valid driver's license at the time of appointment, possession of current, valid Nevada Emergency Medical Technician certification or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification, and possession of current, valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification.

The Reno Fire Department through the Civil Service Commission requires firefighter applicants to pass the National Testing Network, Inc. (NTN) examination to be eligible for hire. After you have completed the exam, you will need to apply through the City's application process to be placed on the eligible list. If you have not already taken the NTN exam, you may sign up at www.nationaltestingnetwork.com, select Fire and sign up for the Reno Fire Department. Upon completion of the entry-level exam, all candidate scores will be accessible to the City of Reno Civil Service Commission. Your final ranking on the eligible list will be determined by your most recent score from NTN. Candidates must have submitted an application with all required documentation and have completed the NTN Fire Exam with a passing score, in order to be considered for the eligible list. Civil Service will place candidates who have met all requirements and have a valid CPAT (within 12 months of application) on the eligible list.

This preference is only used to break ties. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.
